Study: 5Was It Actually A Cross?
Jesus
Christ, our Lord, told unto his Apostles that the Conforter, which is the
Holy Spirit, He shall teach them all things (John
14:26) ; as well as we all, which should be of Him
acknowledge as Genuine Church’s members (Ephesians
2:19-22). Wherefore, if you are our Brother in Jesus Christ,
because you have received to the Holy Spirit, we do suggest you
search out this matter looking for the Truth itself (Romans
8:16 ; John 5:39).
Was
Christ slew on a cross or on a tree (timber) ?
As
regards his Sacrifice, in the New Testament (NT) passages with the word
“cross” are predominant. In a few cases appears the word “tree”,
and because such a few cases our uneasiness for searching out this
matter grew up ; so being led by the Holy Spirit (Romans
8:14) we did search it based only on the Holy Scriptures. We
found, as a result, some Old Testament (OT) versicles which refers to
uttermost way for criminals punishment, both unto adversaries and those
who being israelites did trangress against Law (Deuteronomy
21:22-23 ; Joshua
8:29; Joshua
10:26-27 ; Ezra
6:11).
Throughout
our searching it was confirmed that there is a very close relation (same
meaning) between the word “tree” from OT and the same word in NT, as
we thought at first. Thus we found a perfect Concordance between that
which Paul the Apostle wrote in Galatians
3:13 and Deuteronomy
21:22-23. “Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the Law,
being made a curse for us : for it is written, Cursed Is Every One
That Hangeth On A Tree” (Galatians
3:13).
“And
if a man have committed a sin worthy of death, and he be to be put to
death, and thou hang him on a tree : his body shall not remain all
night upon the tree, but thou shalt in any wise bury him that day ;
for he that is hanged is accursed of God ...” (Deuteronomy
21:22-23). When
we did survey deepper the former passages, it was found as follows : *
“And if a man have
committed a sin worthy of death ...” (search out : John
18:38 ; John 19:6-7 ;
Luke 23:4 ; Matthew
27:15-26 ; Mark
15:1-20). *
The Lord didn’t commit a sin never, and much less a sin worthy of death
(see Luke 23:13-25) ;
but, any way, those who were criminals were hanged on a tree to slay them
(Luke 23:39)
rather than on a cross. *
The dead body didn’t
remain all night upon the tree, but it was buried that day (Luke
23 :50-54 ; Matthew
27:57-61 ; Mark
15:42-47). *
For cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree (Galatians
3:13).
In
addition, Peter the Apostle does affirm : “Who his own self bare
our sins on his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should
live unto Rightheousness ...” (1
Peter 2:24).
In
Acts of the Apostles (5:29-30)
it is written that all the Apostles said : “We ought to Obey God
rather than men. The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, Whom ye slew and
hanged on a tree”. Moreover, the Apostles said too : “And we are
witnesses of all things which He did both in the land of the Jews, and in
Jerusalem, whom they slew and hanged on a tree” (Acts
10:39). “And when they had fulfilled all that was written of
Him, they took Him down from the tree, and laid Him in a sepulchre” (Acts
13:29). Conclusion. *
It was written about Him that He should be hanged on a tree ; and the
Scripture cannot be broken (see John
10:34-35 ; Psalms
119:126). Therefore, it is not samething to use the word
“cross” instead “tree”, for the ordinary use of the word
“cross” is a misrepresentation of the Truth (2
Peter 3:16) A- men.
